I joined the Burgh Bears shortly after moving to Pittsburgh - I found a great, supportive and FUN community; the events are enjoyable, and the members are great people to hang out with. I strongly encourage coming to an event or meeting and checking us out! Take care!
For those interested in some technical specs about the website and what I do...
The burghbears website is hosted on a XEN virtual instance provided by gandi.net. URSUS is a web-application built on top of ruby-on-rails which forms the core of the website. URSUS was built from the ground up, specifically for the club, to provide the features that members desired. Unlike many websites, where the webmaster is responsible for publishing all content (and thus, creating a bottleneck), URSUS was designed to allow self-service. Members can upload their own pictures, and, for instance, the events manager can make changes which automatically are reflected on our events page. As webmaster of the burghbears, I work primarily behind the scenes, maintaining and adding new features to URSUS, and maintaining the server.
